Eye Diseases and Surgery
Ophthalmology surgery covers surgical procedures used in the treatment of various diseases affecting the eye and structures around the eye. These surgical interventions are performed to treat problems that may occur in different parts of the eye. Here are some common types of eye surgery and their areas of application:
Cataract Surgery:
Cataract is the opacity of the lens of the eye, which can significantly reduce the quality of vision.
The surgical procedure is performed by removing the cloudy lens and inserting an artificial lens (intraocular lens).
Thanks to modern techniques, this procedure is usually performed with minimally invasive methods and the patient experiences a rapid recovery process.
Refractive Surgery:
Methods such as LASIK, PRK and LASEK are used to correct refractive errors of the eye (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism).
These methods change the shape of the cornea, allowing light to focus properly on the retina.
Surgery may reduce or completely eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.
Glaucoma Surgery:
Glaucoma is a condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure and, if left untreated, can lead to blindness.
The surgical procedure aims to reduce intraocular pressure by improving the drainage of intraocular fluid.
Various methods can be used, such as trabeculectomy and glaucoma implants.
Retinal Surgery:
It is used for conditions such as retinal surgery, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy.
Vitrectomy involves removing the vitreous material to perform delicate operations on the retina.
Other methods, such as laser treatment or cryotherapy, may be used to stabilize the retina.
Corneal Surgery:
It is applied for corneal diseases, injuries or disorders.
Corneal transplantation involves replacing the damaged cornea with a healthy donor cornea.
New techniques allow replacement of only damaged corneal layers, resulting in faster healing and less risk of rejection.
Eyelid Surgery:
It is performed for sagging, tumors or other abnormalities in the eyelids.
This surgery can also be performed for aesthetic purposes.
Blepharoplasty is a popular procedure that involves reshaping the eyelids.
Strabismus Surgery:
Strabismus is a misalignment of the eyes and can occur for a variety of reasons.
Surgery restores the correct alignment of the eyes by shortening or repositioning the eye muscles.
This procedure offers both aesthetic and functional improvements.
Each type of surgery is planned specifically based on the patient's needs and the condition of the eye.
